How To Build A Home Surveillance System On A Shoestring Budget

To own a home security surveillance system can be cheaper and more readily then ever before. You don't need to rely on a big company product, spending hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on a set of equipments that you are not familiar with.

Build your own security surveillance system at home and watch almost everything you can from anywhere you want.

DVR, digital video recorder system, is the perfect way to build a computer and Internet based home surveillance system. All you need are a home computer with adequate Internet connection, surveillance cameras and a DVR card with software. You can set up your system with a computer where various home surveillance cameras are connected together threading your surveillance system to survey surrounding areas, record visuals to the HDD (hard disk drive).

Computer and Internet request.

A host computer, not need to be much advanced, is the core of the system. Your computer records and plays captured video via monitor, and streams videos to Internet. Make sure there are enough free hard drive space for the record data. If you want scheduled recording, or motion activated recording, a large capacity hard drive is essential for data store and later evidence proving. Also, a reliable high speed Internet connection is a must-have. Note that a dial-up Internet connection definitely won't work because you'll need faster speed for video streaming and remote Internet controlling.

Types of camera and other issues.

A security camera can come in many different styles including dome, bullet, infrared. The security camera that will work best for your application will depend on several factors such as whether you will use the security cameras inside or out, during the day, nighttime, or both. Bullet style security cameras are the most popular. They can be used inside or out.

These security cameras come in relative small size and the camera casings are weather resistant and don't require added external protection. Infrared security cameras are also very popular as they allow an image to be seen in little or no lighting conditions. Most infrared cameras are bullet style and can be used inside or out.

The cameras have infrared lighting which allows the security camera to see in no light for up to 25 feet - even further with a little bit of light (like street lighting or an outside light.) Whichever your choose, these cameras are quite cheap, around 20 dollars, even cheaper if you buy from an online store.

DVR card and software.

Install a DVR card and its software in your PC to begin building your surveillance system. In the market, most popular ones are 4 channels, 8 channels and 12 channels which need the same numbers of cameras.

The latest software features motion activated recording, remote surveillance, automatically notifications to your cell phone, home or office when motion is detected, scheduled recording, 24/7 full-time recording and more.

The prices range from dozens to two or three hundreds dollars. So choose a software that best fit your needs and home conditions.

How to Get Rid of Field Mice

If you have a field mice infestation inside or outside the home, then follow these tips. If you aren't sure if they are technically field mice or not, it's OK because this process will work with any kind of mouse.

First you need to mow the yard as short as possible and clean up any extra sticks or leaves in the to make it difficult for the mice to have a place to live and seek out shelter.

Outdoors you have a few more options than you do indoors because you don't have the fear of mice dying inside your walls. Only try these techniques if you are sure they aren't in your home.

Usa bait stations. These work well at killing mice, but be aware that it's a poisonous process. For the most part these will help control the population.

Soda pop in a bowl will be attractive to the mice. It can make them sick and kill them.

Use instant mashed potatoes. These will be eaten by mice and will cause their bellies to swell and kill them.

If you have field mice inside the home, there are some ways of getting rid of them.

Clean up the house and seal up all food products completely. Don't leave clothes around the house.

Seal up any cracks you find with steel wool because mice can't chew through steel.

Inside it's harder to use poisons and baits cause children and pets could come in contact with them. Use sticky traps and traps instead to be on the safe side or better yet electronic rodent control devices.

What Makes a Humane Mouse Trap Humane?

When there are mice problems in your house or garage, you want to get rid of them. Some do want them out, but want to do so with more humane methods versus ones that cause the mouse to suffer for extended periods of time. What makes a humane mouse trap more humane?

There actually isn't a standard definition for a humane mouse trap. Typically it's thought that a trap that kills to do so within 10 seconds or less with very limited pain for it to be called a humane trap. There are some styles of traps to consider.

The first are catch and release traps. These can be considered to be more humane since they don't kill but at times they do with neglect. If the mouse is trapped and left alone, they end up starving which is worse than a trap that doesn't kill near instantly since it's a slow and painful process to not have food. These need to be responsibly checked on daily if releasing is your goal.

Other types of traps are electric ones that have near instant kills. Traditional traps like glue traps or snap traps can take awhile to actually kill the pest. Snap traps can be instant at times but also can break bones in the mouse and leave it to suffer. There are electric traps that will quickly and efficiently kill the mouse preventing unnecessary pain and struggle.

When purchasing a trap, consider what actually happens. If there is a chance for prolonged suffering, it's a good trap to avoid.

Organic Pest Control - Humane Cat, Squirrel, Dog and Deer Repellent

At some point we all have a problem with pests in our gardens. But, most people feel some connection with nature when gardening, and while they want to get rid of those pests they don't want to harm the critters in doing so.

So what are some humane ways to get rid of garden pests? Basically, you need to make them uncomfortable in some way, but not necessarily in a painful way. You can offend one of their senses, but at times doing so offends yours as well.

You can try repellents to scare garden pests away, using scents from predators like fox urine, but that will only repel certain garden pests, and the repellent can wash away in the rain.

You can try a repellent like pepper on the plant surface, but that means the deer or other animal would have actually eaten some of your plants already.

Imagine that you could only stand guard at your garden with a simple garden hose with a sprayer attached, you could be sure of scaring off the most persistent of pests if your were to suddenly spray them for just a few seconds when they approached the garden. And if you were to consistently do so for a week or two, the pest would eventually get frustrated enough to move on. This would work with almost any pest, including deer, dogs, cats, skunks, herons, and even armadillos.

If you could only set this up to be automated, and to work both day and night it wold truly be an organic pest control that would be an effective repellent for all sorts of garden pests. This is the basic idea behind the Scarecrow Motion Activated Sprinkler system. This system has a motion detector built into a sprinkler head, that will automatically spray the intruding pest for just a few seconds, repelling your garden pests while doing them no harm.

So this concept to repel garden pests sounds deceptively simple, almost too good to work. Does it really work that well?

Should You Use Your Backyard Dirt For Gardening?

Many who are getting into gardening have to first start with their soil. Obviously it's hard to garden without a good soil. To the beginner the common consideration is to use their backyard soil for their plants. Is this something that should be done?

It depends on what you are growing and what you expect from what you grow. If you are growing some flowers or bushes for aesthetics, using the soil that is already in the ground is an option to consider. The plants might not grow as well or be as healthy, but it can be done. If you are growing food in the yard, the soil there isn't best.

Most soil in the backyard is dead meaning that it is nutrient deficient. This means that when you try to grow plants for food in that soil, you won't have very good results.

A second issue to consider about backyard soil is that it is full of chemicals from many people fertilizing their lawns. While some might not mind these types of products being in their food, others have concerns about it. It will be difficult to keep these out as the roots of your plants will be getting the same things that the grass plants are being sprayed with which might not be best for your food plants.

Composting soil is an alternative to look into. Not only can you control the soil your plants are in getting better results, you can also continue the composting process and create quality, live soil that will give you a better garden. The more variables, like the soil, you have control over, the easier it will be to become a successful gardener.

A Simple Homemade Mouse Trap to Get the Rodents Out of Your Garage

Sometimes you have mice in your garage which are difficult to get out. There are quite a few commercial products that can deal with mice problems very effectively. At times though you might only have seen a few mice and just want a simply way of getting rid of these few mice simply and quickly. There is one technique that can be used to get rid of some mice this week.

You will need a large bucket or better yet a large plastic bin. It need to be something that is at least a foot deep so that the mice will have a very difficult time climbing out on the slick plastic walls of the container.

Take this container and put something like peanut butter at the bottom of it. Mice tend to love the smell and will be more attracted to this than any other odor in your garage.

Make a ramp for the mice so they can crawl up. A flat piece of wood will work best. Consider placing some seeds along this to get the mouse to continue to go up. At the top of the trap, place a tube from your paper towel roll. Put a small bit of peanut butter on the end of this. When the mouse climbs into the roll it will tip and make the pest fall into the container. At times this trap can work without the roll as well.

Be sure to also remove some things in your garage that might be attracting the mice like your pet food. Consider putting this into a sealed container to help lower the chance of attracting more mice problems.

How To Keep Deer Out Of The Garden

Well, the word has gotten out. The deer know you have started another buffet of green delicacies.
Word spreads fast in the forest and it won't be long before these uninvited guests will arrive at
your garden gate.

Deer tend to feed on our gardens at night making it difficult to keep them out of the garden.
Some favorites of deer are: Apples, Arborvitae/white cedar, Arrow wood Viburnum, Birch, Day lilies,
Dogwood, Euonymus, Garden lilies, Hostas, Hydrangea, Impatiens, Linden/basswood, Yews , and Roses.
An important factor that will effect how often deer enter your vegetable garden, is availability
of food in their native habitat.

Unless you live in a city, the odds are you will have deer in your garden at some point. If you
live in the country, your garden is almost like having an open invitation for dinner - everyday.
These nuisance deer can be difficult to deter without taking some serious and consistent action
to prevent them from enjoying a buffet dinner that you call your garden.

So how do you keep deer out of the garden?

There are several ways to keep deer out of your garden, some of these deer repellents you may not even be aware of. In addition, there are many plants that deer will usually avoid. One of the hottest products to hit the market to protect your plants from deer is the Scarecrow - a motion activated sprinkler that shoots a 3 second burst of water in the direction that triggers it.

There are many home remedies that may be effective, but only for a short time. Fencing is expensive,
labor intensive and needs to be at least six feet high - besides, who wants to hide their beautiful
garden behind a fence - in some case a fence is not even an option. Planting deer resistant plants
may deter deer until they get really hungry - kind of like kids and spinach. Dry weather will
attracted deer to irrigated plants for the refreshing moisture.

Overall, the final consensus amongst most gardeners is effective deer management requires a combination
of deterrents to be effective. This includes commercial repellents combined with home made remedies
as listed below. Fencing for most of us, is not an option and very expensive. As such, we won't cover
fencing here. Instead we will focus on the known alternatives.

Deer Repellents & Control:

Use these known deer repellents and controls in combination for best results

Dogs: A dog that will actively chase away deer is probably the number one, most effective deer deterrent
there is. If your dog does not wonder, keep him out at night and you should have no further problem
with deer. If fido is a little on the lazy side, other alternatives as listed below may warrant attention.

The Scarecrow: The Scarecrow is a motion activated sprinkler that works both day and night. It not only scares away deer, but is effective for cats, dogs, rabbits, raccoons and larger birds. It sprays a maximum
35 foot stream of water for 3 seconds. One 9 volt battery will provide approximately 3000 bursts
of water. Works on water pressure between 30 - 80 psi (use a pressure reducer at higher psi),
is fully adjustable and comes with a 24 month warranty.

Liquid Fence ®: All natural, the long lasting Liquid Fence ® Deer & Rabbit Repellent will stop deer and rabbits from
eating your flowers, shrubs, vegetable plants, trees and vines. And rest assured, it won't harm
your plants or animals! The manufacturer offers a written 100% money back guarantee.

Features as noted on the Liquid Fence® website:

* Environmentally safe and biodegradable

* USDA field tested

* Easy-to-use

* Long lasting and rain resistant

* Family & pet friendly

* 100% Money Back Guarantee

* Member tested and recommended by the National Home Gardening Club!

* We have not used this product, but it has been recommended by fellow gardeners - usually the most reliable source.

Electric Fence: The electric fence is often overlooked by many gardeners. It is very effective for cattle
and horses and offers some protection against deer - although if they jump over and never
touch it, they will not be afraid of it. Fortunately, deer tend to graze and nibble as they
feed and the odds are in your favor that they will touch your fence and flee, realizing this
area is better left alone.

Electric fences are best used for the vegetable garden in back yards, were public access is
restricted. You do not want the neighbors kids running home and telling their parents they got
zapped. Unless you live in a rural area, you may also find it difficult to find a supplier.
This can be overcome by shopping online or traveling to rural or farming communities near you.
Select a low powered fence designed for smaller livestock - after all, you are not trying to
keep animals the size of horses or cattle out of the garden.

Low lying electric fences (and low powered) can be effective for Rabbits and other smaller
animals. They should be kept very low to the ground using two lines, set on an angle away
from the garden - set the first line about 3" above the ground and the second about 8".
Keep the lines clear of grass, shrubs or any other material that will ground the charge
and reduce the effectiveness of the fence.

A new electric fence for slugs is under development in Canada and should be on the market by
2007. We can not elaborate on this now, but testing is proving very successful and we will
provide details when given the go ahead from the developer.

Deer Repellent Plant Protec: A new product from http://www.deerbusters.com, this all natural green Deer Repellent plant protector
clips easily on most plants. Emits a non-offensive garlic odor keeping deer and other unwanted
pests away. Environmentally safe with no spraying and no mess. Plant Protec lasts up to 8 months.

Egg Based Deer Repellent: A another product from http://www.deerbusters.com is the Deer Repellent egg based repellent, it has been tested and proven effective against deer browsing. This unique product repels by odor but, unlike some repellents, Deer Away will not be offensive to you. Tested in independent studies
by the USDA and Penn State. Deer Away was originally developed for use in large reforestation
projects. One application will last up to 2 months. This product is designed for pines, firs,
fruits, citrus and ornamentals. Other names this product is known as include "Deer Away" & "Deer-Off".

Human Hair: Human hair wrapped in a old nylon and hung on branches or tucked between plants will provide some protection against deer and various animals. The smell of a human indicates danger to
most wild animals and should keep deer away from these areas.

Tree Guard(tm) : Tree Guard with Bitrex(tm) is another deer deterrent. It is lightly sprayed on seedlings, shrubs, ornamentals, hedges and flowers to produce a lingering nasty taste that animals do
not like - DO NOT USE on anything that you will be eating.

The bitter tasting Bitrex is locked into the plant surface forming a "protective jacket"
which resists dew, snow, rain and vaporization. One quart can covers 250-400 seedlings, one
gallon - approximately 1000 seedlings. Not a concentrate - ready to go! Tree Guard does not
wash off, it adheres with a single application and continues to protect through all kinds of weather.

The Manufacturer states that Tree Guard is the most effective deer deterrent on the market today.
We have not used it, so we cannot back this one up.

Bar Soap: Said to work by a number of gardeners, Take a piece of ivory soap, drill a hole in it, tie it to
the plant. The deer won't come near your plant. You can also put a bar in an old stocking and hang
in shrubs - try to find a location, like under large leaves, that will protect the soap from rain
and watering - the bar of soap will last much longer.

Sound Based Deterrents: Their are a number of motion activated sound based deterrents available. However, for most people
these can cause more problems with neighbors, than the positive results in your garden. Imagine the
neighbors delight, when a high pitched noise goes off several times during the we hours of the night.

If you live in a remote, rural area and feel you won't be woken up in the night by such products,
check around online for possible suppliers.

Marigolds - Myth or Fact?: It has been suggested that marigolds planted in a garden will keep deer away. I have tried this on several occasions with little effect. This does not mean it will not work. It is possible that I did not plant enough, or that I used the wrong variety. If you want to try this, I would plant around the plants deer like to eat. Marigolds are attractive and are reported to keep away various insects so it will do any harm to plant them regardless.

Now, if none of these solutions keeps the inquisitive deer out of your garden, a regular fence may be your only choice. However, it is a pretty good bet you'll have success with one of these options. Good Luck!

The Motion Activated Lawn Sprinkler - Chase Away Those Critters

For any gardener or landscape lover, you know how difficult it can be to keep animals out of your garden or flowers. It can be a real pain, but now a company has designed a motion activated lawn sprinkler to solve this problem once and for all.

If you are like me, then you have had to deal with rabbits eating your carrots in the garden, or squirrels, dogs and other animals terrorizing your vegetation. Even deer can be a problem for some homeowners.

The motion activated lawn sprinkler uses infrared technology to detect movement around a 105 degree view. When an animal triggers it, water sprays out and scares off the animal.

The unit works day or night and does a great job I must say. As you can imagine it usually only takes one time of getting sprayed with water to keep the animal from returning.

The lawn sprinkler has a built-in stake that you simply stick into the ground and the unit attaches to any garden hose.

It also includes a dial that you can set to adjust the motion detector and another one that will allow you to adjust the force of the spray.

The sprinkler runs on a 6 month 9-volt battery and can keep everything from a small cat to a deer away from the area you have it set up in.

The motion activated lawn sprinkler is an ingenious idea that really works in keeping the animals away.

Does The Scarecrow Sprinkler System Work For Eliminating Garden Pests

If you have a garden or expensive landscape then you know full well how animal pests can destroy your hard work and efforts. In the old days people used scarecrows, noise makers, traps, and other deterrents to keep animals off their land, and some of these devices where less then humane. With the advance of technology there has been new deterrent devices designed such as the scarecrow sprinkler system. Before deciding on any new deterrent device it would be wise to investigate what it is and how it works, its effectiveness, and above all that it is humane to animals. It is the objective of this article to discuss the pros and con's of the scarecrow sprinkler system.

The scarecrow sprinkler system was developed by a company named Contech Electronics L/G. Contech claims that it designed this system to protect landscape, gardens, fish ponds, and other areas of land from animals such as deer, cats, dogs, raccoons, rabbits, gophers, possums, and even crows and other birds. The scarecrow sprinkler system is said to work similarly to the motion activated security lights around many people's homes by detecting heat and motion. When it sees an intruder, it instantly sprays the target with a 3 second burst of water under full garden hose pressure which is around 2 cups. The fact that this is an automated system, the detector will not know what is shooting at so keep pets and friends clear.

The scarecrow sprinkler system claims that it can see a 100 degree zone and protects an area 35 feet deep and 45 feet wide. Even if the animal bounds out of the way before getting wet, it will be scared and leave the area. Over time, intelligent animals like dogs, cats, and deer, will learn which areas are likely to scare them and no longer frequent them. Scarecrow Sprinkler is said to protect day and night for up to 6 months or 3000 activations on one 9 volt battery. The company claims that the scarecrow sprinkler can be set up easily with just a garden hose to guard a farm, lawn, or backyard and that no professional installation is required.

Animals that get on your land can ruin landscapes and gardens by nibbling on berries, smashing plants, digging holes, eating vegetables, defecating, or scratching outdoor furniture. If you have a fish pond with expensive fish then birds can also be a problem. If you have issues with animal pests you may lose patience over time and decide to take any action that works, often injuring or killing the pest. I beg you to reconsider this type of action as what you consider to be a pest may be somebody else's pet and even if not, a humane approach to animal control is always desired. Because the scarecrow sprinkler uses water with no chemicals and does not rely on ugly barriers or shock treatment, it is said to be completely safe for animals and people. It is said that the jet of water simply scares the target away without doing any physical injury. Of course if you have your own pets then it would be wise to keep them out of the area and let visitors know about your scarecrow system as getting blasted with a stream of water may not be harmful, it is sure to be irritating to guests, visitors, meter readers, and salespeople.

If you have a problem with animal pests tearing up your garden or landscape then you are looking for a solution. The scarecrow sprinkler is said to be humane, safe, and effective and although most companies trying to promote a product will say such things, reviews indicate that people have benefited from this device. As already stated, this system may cause problems with friends, neighbors, and pets who can accidentally get wet not to mention that you would need a great deal of water pressure to shoot a stream 45 feet in distance. While this system may work fine for small gardens or landscapes, it would seem that you would need to find a better solution for larger areas.

Animal repellent for problem visitors in the garden - Dave's MASTERS Method

MASTERS - Multi-Aspect Sensory-Targeted Enemy Response System. Having a problem with deer or other unwelcome animals turning your "red gold" into brown gold? Fences a bit unsightly? Here's a deer (or any animal) repellent technique for the backyard garden using a motion-activated water sprinkler ( I bought it on amazon), along with a homemade piece, a couple of pie plates with a bar of Irish Spring soap inside to serve up a nasty dose of sound (sprinkler and drum sound from water hitting pie pans), sight (the water spout and the wobbling, spinning pie pans with a scary face sporting fangs), smell (irish spring soap), taste (irish spring soap) and touch (water spray). This allows the attacker (you!) to hit on all of the intruder's senses at once. An overwhelming display of force. The proverbial "Shock and Awe". Message to intruder: You are not welcome here! The sprinkler works like it is supposed to, and the pie plates add another angle to trying to get a handle on problem animals. Water enters into the holes I made for the "eyes" on the pie pans. It drips over the soap and exits throungh a little hole on the bottom of the pie pans. After the sprinkler goes off, you can definitely see and smell soapy water dripping from the bottom of the pie pans. Some of the diluted soapy water may get sprayed on the enemy as it drips out the bottom of the pie pans during an event., whicjh is a beautiful thing. The plants emerge completely untainted. This method is much easier than ...

8 Common Fire Hazards In Your Home - Which Ones Could Be Stopped Using A Home Fire Sprinkler?

Over 80% of fire related deaths happen in the home and in a home without a fire sprinkler system, these fires can take over a house before you have time to do anything about it. Here are eight of the quickest and easiest ways you can reduce your house to a pile of ash-without even being aware of it.

1.Walk away from something cooking in the kitchen: The kitchen is often the most fire-prone room in the house. Unattended toasters & hotplates, dishes that are not microwave proof, cookbooks near naked gas flames are common causes of fires.

2.Let your electrical cords get worn out: Frayed or chewed electrical cords start many house fires. Exposed electrical wires will light your floor or rug on fire in no time. Pets often chew on electrical cords as well, causing serious fire hazards.

3.Overload your power strips: Overloaded power strips can also cause fire. When overloaded, they can spark. If they're anywhere near anything flammable-and in most homes they are-a fire is very likely.

4.Buy a malfunctioning electrical appliance: Malfunctioning electrical appliances are a big source of fire. Most of us own more than a few electrical gadgets, all of which can malfunction at any time. Sparks from faulty toasters, coffee makers, televisions, computer monitors, or any electrical appliance you could name can cause serious fires.

5.Put something flammable near something hot: Getting anything flammable near a source of heat is a quick way to start a fire. Some dangerous examples include lamp shades that rest too close to the bulb, clothes or curtains too close to a radiator, or any flammable material close to a space heater.

6.Leave a candle unattended-just for a minute: Candles cause hundreds of fires every year. Even with a safe holder, candles should never be left unattended. It only takes a minute for a pet or child to knock a candle over-or just nudge it too close to flammable material.

7.Use a fireplace or wood stove incorrectly: Fireplaces and wood stoves can be fire hazards when not properly used. Make sure your chimney is clear and clean before burning anything. Never throw away ashes that aren't 100% cool-even the tiniest smoldering coal could easily start a fire in your trash bin.

8.Leave burning cigarettes unattended: Cigarettes are a huge fire hazard. Smoking in bed, leaving a pipe or cigarette unattended, and emptying ashtray contents before they are cold cause hundreds of fires each year.
